The start of a new academic year is one of the busiest and most exciting times on campus. Before students fill classrooms and campus walkways, take a few minutes to check off these important reminders to help ensure a smooth start to the semester.
The academic year officially kicks off with Rowdy Rally, formerly known as Convocation, on Saturday, Aug. 15, MSU Denver’s signature welcome event for new and returning students.
The day begins with Rowdy & Ready, where students can explore campus, locate classrooms and connect with campus resources before joining the official welcome ceremony and an afternoon Roadrunner carnival featuring food, games and music.
“Rowdy Rally is our first opportunity to show students what it means to be a Roadrunner and set the tone for the year,” said Alicia Montoya, program coordinator for Belonging and Student Engagement. “Every faculty and staff member who participates helps show students and their families that they’re joining a community that’s invested in their success from the moment they arrive.
“Watching them walk through the clap line and experience that sense of belonging is one of my favorite moments of the year.”
Employees volunteering at the event should also attend the staff logistics meeting Aug. 10.
Your fall 2026 checklist
Update your technology
If you received a new phone or changed your contact information over the summer, update your Office 365 multi-factor authentication (MFA) settings before the fall semester begins. Also, be sure your University-issued computer has completed any pending software updates.

Check your classroom equipment
Faculty should verify that classroom technology, software and equipment are ready before classes begin. If you need software installed or equipment checked out, contact the ITS Service Desk.
Plan ahead for construction
Several major projects continue across campus, including construction of MSU Denver’s Summit House residence hall and the Gina and Frank Day Health Institute. Periodic traffic disruptions and pedestrian detours are expected throughout the year.
Additional improvements include renovations at the Auraria Event Center and other campus infrastructure projects.
Budget for parking changes
Daily parking rates increased by 25 cents July 1 for the 2026-27 fiscal year. Be sure to review updated parking and transportation information before your first trip to campus.
Watch for a new dining option
A new restaurant, Recess Tivoli, is expected to open before the start of the fall semester in the former Tivoli Brewing and Quad Side Tavern space, bringing additional dining options to campus.
Mark your calendar for a message from President Davidson
Don’t miss President Janine Davidson’s Welcome Back event Tuesday, Sept. 1, in the King Center Concert Hall. The annual gathering celebrates the start of the academic year and highlights University priorities for the year ahead.
Take care of yourself
As the semester ramps up, remember that employee well-being resources are available year-round, including mental health, emotional wellness and practical support services. Employees can also share many of these resources with students.
