VIDEO: President Davidson and George Sparks talk science, service and lifelong learning

Fireside Chat with Denver Museum of Nature and Science CEO explores career paths and the value of serving others.

In the 14th President’s Fireside Chat at Metropolitan State University of Denver, President Janine Davidson, Ph.D., and George Sparks, president and CEO of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, found common ground from their early days as Air Force pilots to current leadership roles in service-oriented organizations.

The conversation returned frequently to the importance of relationships, public service and finding purpose beyond personal success.

“I think if you’re here to serve other people and you really embrace that, and you enjoy the concept of learning,” Sparks said, “life is a miracle.”

Sparks also shared insights into the museum’s collection of 4.5 million objects, only 0.2% of which are on display, and its upcoming Pokémon fossil exhibit. Davidson announced a partnership that will send University professors to become tour guides at the museum.

Sparks’ parting advice was to embrace new experiences, even when they feel intimidating.

“Take a chance and say yes on something that maybe you’re a little nervous about, but say yes and go for it.”
