As part of Metropolitan State University of Denver’s ongoing commitment to keeping campus technology secure, reliable and compatible with modern applications, Information Technology Services has announced the rollout of major operating-system upgrades for University computers. The upgrades are available now, with an important deadline of Aug. 1 for Windows users approaching.
What’s changing?
MSU Denver’s annual operating-system update includes:
- Windows 11: All University-owned Windows computers will be upgraded to the latest version of Windows 11.
- macOS Sequoia: Shared-use macOS devices, such as computer-lab and front-desk machines, will be upgraded to macOS Sequoia. The upgrade is also available for single-user Mac computers through Self Service.
These updates are part of MSU Denver’s standard summer maintenance schedule, ensuring that systems remain secure, functional and compatible with evolving software and web services.
Why the upgrade matters
Regular operating-system updates aren’t just about new features — they play a critical role in:
- Enhancing security to protect devices and data from emerging threats.
- Ensuring compatibility with the latest versions of essential applications.
- Maintaining performance and stability, preventing unexpected disruptions during the academic year.
By upgrading now, users can avoid potential issues and ensure that their devices are ready for the busy fall semester.
Who is impacted?
Any employee who uses an MSU Denver computer that isn’t yet running Windows 11 or macOS Sequoia is impacted. That includes:
- All MSU Denver Windows devices still running older operating systems.
- All MSU Denver Mac devices, particularly shared-use computers, which will be upgraded automatically.
What employees need to do
IT Services strongly encourages faculty and staff members to set aside time now to install the upgrade on their assigned University computer. The process is straightforward:
- Windows users: Install the update through Settings.
- Mac users: Install the update through Self Service.
As a precaution, backup your folders with OneDrive prior to any installation to ensure your files are protected.
For shared-use computers such as front-desk and lab machines, IT Services will perform automatic upgrades.
Important: Any Windows computers not upgraded by Aug. 1 will be updated automatically. To avoid interruptions or surprises during this process, users should complete the upgrade at their convenience before the deadline.
