Faculty and staff members at Metropolitan State University of Denver who manage grant-funded projects now can earn a professional credential through the new Roadrunner principal-investigator certification program. The program, which launched in early October, equips principal investigators (PIs) with the tools to lead externally funded grants and sponsored projects while ensuring compliance.
“MSU Denver is full of talented, driven people who want to grow in their careers,” said Laneika Musalini, executive director of the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs. “This certification not only supports compliance but also recognizes their achievement with a credential they can share on their résumé.”
Principal investigators are required for all sponsored projects. They are responsible for the technical success of the work and the financial stewardship of the funds. Without strong internal controls, universities may face audit risk, red flags or potential fines. Musalini said the new certification program was developed to standardize knowledge across campus and reduce risk, which is especially important during a time of heightened federal scrutiny.
“This is about being proactive,” she said. “We want to ensure that every Roadrunner PI understands the responsibilities that come with sponsored funds and feels confident in leading their projects.”
The certification is offered fully online through Canvas, with three modules covering the life cycle of a grant:
- Getting started
- Preaward
- Postaward
- A bonus module on private foundation grants is also available.
Each module takes about 75 minutes to complete and is divided into shorter lessons to allow participants to work at their own pace.
The certification is mandatory for all those serving as PI on sponsored projects, is required for all new principal investigators before submitting a proposal and must be renewed every three years. Participants who complete the program will receive a digital microcredential issued by the Office of Online Learning. The badge serves as recognition of their expertise in research leadership and compliance.
Full-time faculty and staff members who qualify for the certification can find the training in their Canvas accounts.
