Metropolitan State University of Denver has adopted an updated Student Code of Conduct designed to make expectations and conduct processes clearer for students and the employees who work with them.
The 2026–28 Student Code of Conduct is the result of a yearlong review by a committee of students, faculty and staff members. The revised code uses more consistent language, increases transparency around conduct procedures and incorporates national best practices while keeping students at the forefront.
“The Student Code of Conduct is an important resource for our entire campus community because it helps students understand what is expected of them and what they can expect from the conduct process,” said Taylor Tackett, associate vice president for Student Engagement and Well-being and dean of students. “These updates make the code easier to navigate while strengthening our focus on learning, accountability and a safe, inclusive campus community.”
What employees need to know
Among the significant changes, the updated code:
- Connects conduct expectations with MSU Denver’s CADRE values and more clearly describes the philosophy and learning outcomes behind the conduct process.
- Expands and reorganizes conduct violations to better distinguish different forms of harm.
- Makes clearer policies related to alcohol and drugs.
- Clarifies intersection of Title IX and student-conduct processes.
- More clearly defines types of academic misconduct and the academic-misconduct process.
- Allows varying lengths of conduct probation rather than probation continuing indefinitely.
- Establishes a new appeals process involving a board that includes students.
- Adds guidance to help students prepare for conduct meetings and clarifies how the code is interpreted and revised.
The revisions followed opportunities for campus input during spring semester, including virtual and in-person town halls, a virtual feedback form and drop-in hours in the Dean of Students Office. The review committee considered the feedback before finalizing the code.
How to use this information
Faculty and staff members are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Student Code of Conduct, particularly the conduct standards and conduct process. Understanding the code can help employees provide accurate information and better direct students who have questions about expectations or conduct procedures.
Employees are also invited to attend virtual training sessions with the Dean of Students office on Aug. 25 and Aug. 31.
