Ethan Waples, Ph.D., has been selected as dean of the College of Business at Metropolitan State University of Denver following his interim service in the role.

Provost Matt Makley, Ph.D., said Waples was chosen for his student-centered leadership, collaborative approach and focus on innovation aligned with the college’s strategic priorities. Waples joined MSU Denver in 2022 and is former associate dean of the college. He oversaw significant enrollment growth in the MBA program, which he led as director.

“We prioritized leadership that advances student success, supports faculty and staff excellence, and positions the college for continued innovation and growth,” Makley said. “Dr. Waples brings a demonstrated commitment to enriching the student experience while fostering an inclusive, collaborative environment where faculty and staff can thrive.”

Makley highlighted Waples’ record of interdisciplinary leadership and his work designing innovative, industry-connected MBA curricula centered on applied projects and leadership development. As MBA director, Waples also guided the college through its most recent AACSB reaccreditation, writing the self-study report and leading engagement with the review team.

He is also leading forward-looking initiatives, including the integration of artificial intelligence into academic programs and a pilot 14-week semester model designed to better align academic structures with student needs.

“Together, these strengths align closely with the college’s mission and strategic priorities, and position the College of Business for continued excellence, innovation and impact,” Makley said.

Waples said he is eager to build on momentum with a laser focus on student success. His priorities include supporting students from recruitment to career, fostering the College of Business’ inclusive culture grounded in its CADRE values, and communicating the college’s story to strengthen partnerships across campus and with industry.

“When we do those things well,” Waples said, “innovation and opportunity follow.”

Waples’ appointment follows a nationwide search for a successor to Ann Murphy, Ph.D., who retired from the University last year after 27 years of service to the College of Business, including 14 as dean.

“I’m extremely fortunate to step into this role on a firm foundation of leadership built over more than a decade that provides the College of Business with a strong platform for what comes next,” Waples said. “Our exceptional faculty and professional staff are deeply committed to our students and community, and that commitment creates space and opportunity for creativity and meaningful innovation.”
