In an effort to streamline technology operations and cut unnecessary software costs, Metropolitan State University of Denver will soon begin installing a software-inventory tool, Sassafras, on all University-owned Windows and macOS computers.
The new system will replace older programs, LabStats and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, used to track software use and manage licenses. University officials say the transition to Sassafras will simplify software management and help the University save money on software renewals.
What Sassafras does and doesn’t do
Sassafras will collect inventory data such as the names, editions and versions of installed software; the type of device and operating system; and how often software is used.
The program does not monitor personal information, such as keystrokes, emails, files, webcam access or web browsing.
Consolidating software tracking into a single system will help MSU Denver:
- Ensure compliance with software licensing agreements
- Avoid redundant software purchases
- Improve the accuracy of technology inventory
- Make data-driven decisions about renewals and support
Deployment of the Sassafras agent will take place gradually over the coming weeks. The software will be installed only on MSU Denver–owned computers, and no action is required from users. There is no anticipated downtime or interruption to work.
