Internships can be a valuable part of a student’s education, but navigating the process isn’t always straightforward.
In fact, internships are the top source of confusion and frustration the Kemper Classroom to Career Hub hears about from students, faculty and staff.
Requirements for earning academic credit vary by department, and not every program has a dedicated internship coordinator. That can leave faculty and staff fielding questions about unfamiliar processes while students struggle to find the right information.
To address those challenges, the Kemper C2Hub has revamped web pages and developed new resources to make internship information easier to find, understand and share.
Five internship resources to bookmark
The redesigned landing page organizes career-development resources by topic, using student-friendly language and linking to detailed guidance and examples.
A step-by-step guide helps students explore internships, prepare application materials, find opportunities, interview and make the most of their experience. It also highlights alternatives for students who cannot pursue a traditional internship.
3. Internships for academic credit
Students can find checklists, University and department policies, application instructions, approval steps, and course-registration guidance — plus reminders about what to do after their internship ends.
4. Internship credit policies by major
This new page brings internship credit requirements together by major, including department contacts and, where applicable, prerequisites, course information and credit limits.
Previously housed in PDFs within Career Link, the information is now easier to find and update. Department chairs and internship coordinators reviewed the content, which will be reviewed annually.
5. Internship information for faculty and staff
This new guide helps employees navigate internship conversations with students. It includes suggested questions, relevant Kemper C2Hub resources, academic credit procedures, and evaluation and grading guidance for faculty overseeing internships.
More support is coming
The Kemper C2Hub is continuing to develop resources for faculty overseeing internships for credit.
In partnership with Jenn Cheek, Ph.D., assistant professor and Experiential Learning coordinator, the next phase, planned for spring 2027, includes an Internship for Credit handbook with best practices for faculty, employers and interns.
An adaptable Internship for Academic Credit Canvas course shell will also provide a full semester of course materials and assignments that faculty can tailor to their majors.
Help students find their next step
Whether you’re answering a student’s first internship question or overseeing an internship course, these resources can help you provide clearer guidance and connect students with the right support.
