Faculty and staff members with military connections now have a dedicated space to connect at Metropolitan State University of Denver.
VetFams is open to all faculty and staff members who have served in the military, are currently serving or have a family in the armed forces. The group will meet monthly in the Veteran and Military Student Services Office (Tivoli Room 215) and host regular social gatherings, networking events and service opportunities.
“We started VetFams to create a sense of community among veterans and their families at MSU Denver,” said Lisa Bertoson, Coast Guard veteran and SpaceTech Scholars community coordinator in the Aviation and Aerospace Science Department. “It’s a great way to share experiences, support our military-affiliated students and help transitioning service members find a home at the University.”
A space for connection and service
VetFams aims to build a supportive network by:
- Hosting monthly meetings to foster camaraderie and discussion.
- Organizing social events such as the upcoming Women Veteran Appreciation Day on June 12.
- Providing resources for veteran students and employees transitioning from military to civilian life.
- Engaging in community service and outreach efforts.
- Encouraging recruitment of transitioning military members into MSU Denver careers and programs.
“We welcome all faculty and staff members, as well as military-affiliated students,” Bertoson said. “Our only requirement is that members have some connection to the military and support our mission.”
