MSU Denver experts answer questions on immigration policy

University hosts Q&A session on potential federal policy changes.

The Office of the General Counsel and Immigrant Services Program invited Metropolitan State University of Denver students, faculty members and staff members to an open forum Wednesday to ask questions and discuss concerns about potential policy changes that could impact the University mission and community.

Nearly three dozen people attended the event in person, with more than 100 others joining via livestream. General Counsel David Fine and Director of Immigrant Services Gregor Mieder answered questions from attendees. Below are some of the most common questions that Fine and Mieder fielded.

Will there be federal immigration authorities on campus?

We have no indication of planned immigration enforcement actions on campus, and no such activities have occurred to date. Immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility, and the Auraria Campus Police Department does not detain, question or arrest individuals based solely on suspected immigration status. However, ACPD will cooperate with law-enforcement agencies with reason to pursue criminal suspects as required. ACPD remains committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all students.

If federal authorities ever come to campus, what should we do?

Government and law-enforcement agencies may visit campus for nonenforcement activities like career days. To avoid sparking unnecessary fear and anxiety, refrain from spreading rumors. If you believe immigration-related enforcement is occurring, contact General Counsel at 303-605-5364 for guidance.

If an agent attempts to enter a limited-access space, such as a classroom or office, request a warrant and their name, ID number and agency. Politely inform them you must contact University legal counsel for assistance while not obstructing their process.

Will the University provide students’ information?

Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, known as FERPA, student records are confidential and cannot be shared. MSU Denver would not share personal information with immigration officials unless legally compelled by a court-issued subpoena, warrant or other binding order .

What resources are available to immigrant and other students with concerns?

In addition to robust academic and career-planning resources, Immigrant Services has a variety of services including Know Your Rights workshops, family-preparedness plans and pro bono legal counsel available.

Additionally, the LGBTQ Resource Center, Counseling Center and Student Care Center continue to provide robust support.

MSU Denver started its Immigrant Services Program on campus in 1989, making it one of the first of its kind in the nation. Immigrant Services supports all parts of the immigrant journey. They are available by calling 303-615-0035 or visiting their website.
