When Tiffany Nguyen, a Communications major at Metropolitan State University of Denver, took a job as a digital-media assistant for the Early Bird newsletter, she thought it would simply help cover her expenses.
Instead, she became a vital part of the team.
“I’ve been able to apply my skills in organizational communication, team collaboration and problem-solving to keep our content running smoothly,” Nguyen said. “Managing tight deadlines while balancing school and work has helped me strengthen my time-management and organizational skills, which I know are essential to any professional setting.”
Nguyen is one of 1,175 student employees who help keep the University running. As MSU Denver celebrates National Student Employee Appreciation Week (Monday-Friday), the University recognizes students such as Nguyen whose behind-the-scenes work fuels labs, classrooms, newsletters and help desks.
Campus jobs, real-world impact
Student employees bring energy, reliability and a fresh perspective to the teams they serve, and MSU Denver relies on their contributions.
“Student employees are essential to the MSU Denver community,” said April Abernethy, student-employment-programs specialist in the Classroom to Career Hub (C2 Hub). “Their work supports critical services across campus while helping them build career skills and connections. We’re especially proud of the role student employment plays in retention and student success.”
Campus roles are also designed with student needs in mind, offering flexibility that’s critical for Roadrunners who often juggle work, classes and family responsibilities.
For Nguyen, the job has been more than a professional steppingstone; it has also helped her feel more connected to the University community.
“The greatest benefit I get from working on campus is the sense of community,” she said. “I’ve never felt more welcomed, and as I’m an introvert, this position has helped me step out of my shell, opening up more professional opportunities than I ever anticipated.”
