Media Buzz: MSU Denver experts talk mosquitoes, Broncos unis and more   

Journalists turn to our faculty and staff members to shed light on stories making local and national headlines.

What do a state-of-the-art health simulation laboratory, an unusually quiet West Nile virus season and Broncos uniforms have in common? They were all news topics in local media stories last month, which all featured expert sources from Metropolitan State University of Denver. 

MSU Denver faculty and staff members appear on the air and in print and digital news publications nearly every day, using their expertise to shed light on important local and national issues. 

MSU Denver Experts Guide 

More than 200 MSU Denver faculty and staff members are part of the University database that reporters turn to when the need credible story sources. If you’re interested in becoming an expert in the media, contact Tim Carroll, senior director of media and public relations.

Bob Hancock, Ph.D., Biology professor, interviewed with The Colorado Sun to discuss Colorado’s unusually quiet West Nile virus season. He explained that 2024 weather patterns reinforced the direct relationship between rainfall and the local mosquito population.

Colorado Public Radio and Denver7 covered the inauguration of the new Interprofessional Simulation and Skills Laboratory. Hope Szypulski, DNP, dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences, was quoted on the importance of representation in the medical field and its positive impact on improving health outcomes for people of color. Jenny Allert, DNP, Nursing chair and associate professor, interviewed along with Nursing students Jimena Zuniga and Marisa Schreiner about how the Sim Labs offer a secure environment to apply classroom knowledge in real-world scenarios before entering actual hospital settings. A RED story helped secure coverage. 

Katia Campbell, Ph.D., College of Letters, Arts and Sciences associate dean and Communications professor, interviewed with 9News to discuss ways to manage freedom of speech and hate speech during public forums. The topic was related to a recent Aurora City Council meeting in which a virtual participant used his public-comment time to make racist and homophobic remarks.

Denver Voice highlighted MSU Denver’s commitment to supporting students facing homelessness and food insecurity through Rowdy’s Corner Food Pantry and housing-assistance programs. Abbie Kell, Student Housing Project manager, shared insights on the significance of these resources and how they positively impact students’ lives, especially during challenging financial times. A RED story contributed to coverage.

Tony Nuñez, Ph.D., Exercise and Sport Sciences associate professor, spoke with 9News about the science behind how darker-colored jerseys retain more heat compared with white jerseys, in connection with the Broncos-Tampa Bay Buccaneers game Sept. 22.
