With only 44% of Colorado’s students in grades 3-8 meeting or exceeding state expectations, the state’s literacy crisis is clear. Research shows that low literacy rates are linked to poorer health outcomes, higher unemployment, higher incarceration rates and lower college-going rates, said Alfred Tatum, Ph.D., professor in the School of Education.
To address these challenges, Metropolitan State University of Denver is launching the Literacy Research Center and Clinic, focused on improving literacy outcomes across all ages, from childhood to adulthood.
Led by Tatum and set to open in February, the Literacy Research Center will investigate the root causes of low literacy rates and associated low science and math achievement. It will collaborate with school districts and policymakers, sharing research findings to inform education practices and policies.
The clinic, as the service arm of the center, will offer diagnostic assessments, tutoring support and professional development for educators. These services, available for children and adults, will be offered at nominal fees to ensure affordability and access for all.
“Everyone should have access to the written word,” said Tatum. “It’s how you protect yourself, your community and your nation. We need to give children privileged access to reading and knowledge development as early as possible.”
Differentiator for future educators
The Research Center and Clinic will also provide opportunities for MSU Denver School of Education students to gain hands-on experience. “The center will position MSU Denver School of Education students and graduate students as supremely prepared and elevate their expertise among their peers,” Tatum said, emphasizing the enrichment opportunities for future educators.
Free reading screenings in February
To celebrate its opening, the clinic will offer free reading screenings for individuals from third grade through adulthood in metro Denver in February. Registration will open in January on the School of Education website.
