Key takeaways

  • Russell D. “Russ” Bean, Ph.D., a longtime faculty member in MSU Denver’s Department of Accounting, is remembered for his dedication to teaching.

The Metropolitan State University of Denver community remembers Russell D. “Russ” Bean, Ph.D., a former Accounting professor whose passion for education and commitment to students helped shape the University’s Accounting program for more than two decades.

Bean joined MSU Denver’s Department of Accounting in 1970, bringing experience as a certified public accountant and educator. He remained on the faculty until 1992, helping students prepare for professional careers while encouraging their personal growth.

Teaching was Bean’s true passion. Throughout his career, he maintained a strong connection to MSU Denver and its students, taking particular pride in helping them succeed personally and professionally. He was known for encouraging students to interview with the big CPA firms and sharing his personal contacts with his students looking for work after graduation. “Dr. Bean cared, and I’m so thankful he steadied me on track,” said one former student who went on to work at Deloitte.

A lifelong commitment to education

Born July 2, 1933, in Spring Arbor, Michigan, Bean served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his military service, he used the GI Bill to begin his college education while working at the Kellogg Company.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from Colorado College in 1959, a master’s degree in accounting from the University of Denver in 1960 and a doctorate in accounting from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1974.

Alongside his teaching career, Bean operated his own CPA firm, earned the Certified Management Accountant designation and published numerous accounting articles. He retired from his accounting practice in 1995.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bean enjoyed golf, gardening, reading, sports and traveling. He and his wife, Mae, traveled to all 50 states, 54 countries and nearly every continent. The couple also shared a love of ballroom dancing for more than 40 years.

Bean is survived by Mae, his wife of 71 years; daughters Valerie Claus, Julie Dutton and Robin Bean; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He passed away June 17 and a private graveside service was held June 24.
