Dear Roadrunners,
Welcome back to campus. It’s the spring semester, but the polar vortex didn’t get the memo. As we bundle up and dive into 2025, here are some important updates and reminders to keep you informed, secure and comfortable during these chilly days.
Social Security Fairness Act: PERA impacts
President Joe Biden recently signed the Social Security Fairness Act into law, repealing two provisions that previously reduced Social Security benefits for retirees with state pensions: the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset.
Historically, the WEP reduced Social Security benefits for retirees receiving state pensions, such as PERA, by hundreds of dollars monthly. Similarly, the GPO limited Social Security survivor benefits for spouses with state pensions, often leaving surviving spouses with little to no benefits. With these repeals, many retirees will see an increase in their Social Security payouts.
The Social Security Administration is working on implementing these changes. While no immediate action is needed, people with questions should contact the SSA directly for guidance.
Workday data-security training deadline is approaching
With cybersecurity threats becoming increasingly sophisticated, keeping sensitive information safe is a priority. To support this effort, Metropolitan State University of Denver requires all employees to complete the Data Security and Privacy Training in Workday by March 28.
The training offers practical tips to protect personal and institutional data, ensuring we all contribute to a secure digital environment. Let’s aim for 100% participation. Completing this training isn’t just a requirement; it’s an investment in our collective security.
Keep your office comfortable during colder weather
Winter in Denver can be unpredictable, but your comfort doesn’t have to be. The Facilities team at MSU Denver is ready to tackle seasonal challenges to ensure a warm and inviting campus.
If you encounter drafty windows, chilly offices or heating issues, don’t hesitate to reach out to Facilities at [email protected]. Be sure to include your building name, room number and a brief description of the issue to expedite assistance.
In the meantime, dressing in layers can help you stay warm while the team works to resolve any problems. Your comfort matters, and we appreciate your patience and partnership.
Have a great semester.
Sincerely,
