Metropolitan State University of Denver welcomes some of its youngest Roadrunners to campus for the upcoming Bring a Child to Work Day event April 23.  

“Employees will have an opportunity to inspire new generations, recruit future Roadrunners and position MSU Denver as a positive workplace while modeling the value of community,” said Imani Morning, executive director of Leadership and Organizational Engagement. 

Full details of the activities highlighting our University community are below. 

Date: April 23

Audience: MSU Denver employees and their families (chosen and extended included) 

Location: Auraria Campus (see below for individual activities) 

Tips for participating MSU Denver families: 

  • Tell your supervisor that you plan to participate.Make a plan to connect with colleagues and team members. 
  • Try to minimize meetings if possible. 
  • Pack a lunch, snacks and water bottles. 
  • Bring an activity kit from home with some favorite toys, books, blankets, etc. 
  • Many activities take place in person across campus. Be sure to bring sunscreen, hats and weather-appropriate clothing. MSU Denver employees should carry their ID badges to access buildings.  

Employees and future Roadrunners can engage in the following event activities. Please note that an MSU Denver employee is required to accompany all children attending Bring a Child to Work Day activities:

Welcome Bags (Human Resources):

Start your day by picking up a welcome bag! We will have fidgets, coloring pages and campus scavenger hunts for families to grab and go. 

  • Time and location: 8 a.m.-noon, JSSB 304 
  • Ages: 3 and up 

Rocket launch (Advanced Manufacturing Sciences Institute):

Students build their own paper rockets and launch them with a bicycle pump. 

  • Time and location: 8 a.m.-noon, AES 160 
  • Ages: 3 and up

Build-a-Badge for Future Roadrunners (Office of the Provost and Undergraduate Studies):

Families can create their own MSU badges (out of paper, stickers and other craft supplies) and write what they would like to study in college on the badge. Snacks and drinks provided. 

  • Time and location: 9-11 a.m., JSSB 330 Provost’s Office 
  • Ages: 3 and up 

Wave Rave (Department of Physics):

Families will learn about waves, from those you can feel and see to waves that are invisible to the naked eye. This activity requires a waiver. 

  • Time and location: two sessions in Plaza 126
    • 10 -11:30 a.m.  
    • 1-2:30 p.m.
  • Ages: 3 and up 

SASsy Crafts and Coloring (Student Academic Services):

Student Academic Services is hosting small papercrafts and coloring along with treats. Color and decorate bookmarks, make cards, color pictures that promote learning, and enjoy small treats. 

  • Time and location: 10 a.m.-noon, JSSB 220 (check in at front desk) 
  • Ages: 5 and up 

Cookie Decorating and Lemonade Stand (School of Hospitality):

The School of Hospitality invites families to visit the HLC, decorate a cookie and make your favorite lemonade beverage in the student lounge. Learn about hospitality, take a tour of the facilities and enjoy. 

  • Time and location: 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Hospitality Learning Center (HLC) Student Lounge (second floor) 
  • Ages: 3 and up 

Cash and Crafts! (Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships):

MSU Denver families will join for fun crafts and earn “Rowdy Bucks,” which they can use to budget and spend on sweets and toys in the office. 

  • Time and location: 10:30 a.m.-noon, JSSB first floor (Financial Aid Office) 
  • Ages 3 and up 

Build Your Own Fidget Boards (Gender Institute for Teaching and Advocacy):

Come visit GITA and help your child design and construct their very own fidget board. All supplies will be provided, and you and your child can select different textures, moving parts and color palettes. Smaller children will require parental assistance. 

  • Time and location: 11 a.m.-1 p.m., CN314 
  • Ages: 3 and up 

Historical Paper Dolls (Department of History):

Historical paper doll making will take place at a craft table in the History Department. 

  • Time and location: 11 a.m.-2 p.m., CN211 
  • Ages: 3 and up 

Field Day with Campus Recreation:

Join Campus Recreation for family-friendly yard games, coloring activities and video games with the E-sports club. Make some memories and get goofy with the 360 camera. 

  • Time and location: 11 a.m.-2 p.m., PE/Event Center 116 
  • Ages: 3 and up 

Budget Director for a Day (Administration, Office of the VP):

Design your own dorm room while managing a budget (budget-related coloring pages for the small children), while supplies last. A light snack will be provided. 

  • Time and location: 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m., JSSB 330C 
  • Ages 3-13 

Robot Races (Engineering and Engineering Technology):

Race Sphero robots through the twists and turns of the AES building and put your engineering instincts to the test! Join the fun, boost your skills and see who can navigate the fastest in this high‑energy robotics challenge. 

  • Time and location: noon-2 p.m., AES fourth floor hallway (near 405: CACED dean’s office) 
  • Ages: 3 and up 

Recording Studio Experience (Center for Teaching, Learning and Design):

MSU Denver employees and their families can come into the Green Screen Studio, choose a background and stand on the recording stage. With family permission, we can record a screenshot or video and send families a digital file. 

  • Time and location: noon-2 p.m., Admin 325 
  • Ages: 3 and up 

MU Admissions Day (TRIO Student Support Services):

Kids become Monsters University applicants for the day, designing their monster selves, completing their college applications and ending with an official acceptance letter to take home while the movie plays in the background. 

  • Time and location: noon-1:30 p.m., JSSB 240 
  • Ages: 5-13 

Roadrunner Rookies: Zumba & Stories (C2Hub):

Join us for Little Roadrunners Move & Groove, a fun-filled Zumba and storytime session designed for MSU Denver staff and their children. Kids can get ready to dance, laugh and imagine as we celebrate movement, creativity and future Roadrunners. This activity requires a waiver. 

  • Time and location: 2-3 p.m., Arts 295 
  • Ages 3-7 

Kids-Parents Lego Challenge (Supporting Parenting Students, under SEW):

Kids and parents can compete or team up to tackle Lego build challenges. Choose from easy, medium or hard challenges (such as building an animal with at least six legs or building a tower as high as you can), sponsored by the FamilyU team (more than one in 10 MSU Denver students is a parent).  

  • Time and location: 2-3 p.m., Plaza 220A3 Conference Room 
  • Ages: 3 and up 

Gamelan Workshop: Hit stuff! (Music Department):

Children and their caretakers can learn basic techniques for Balinese gamelan and vocal music. Gamelan is energetic music from the island of Bali in Indonesia. The percussion instruments are made of bronze and bamboo. This workshop provides the basics for this communal style of music and is open to everyone — no experience needed. 

  • Time and location: 2:30-3:30 p.m., King Center Music and Dance Studio (KC-120)
