September is national Emergency Preparedness Month. Faculty and staff members can do their part to stay safe and well on campus by following these tips:
Update contact information in the Emergency Notification System
When a campus emergency or safety incident occurs, the Auraria Campus Police Department and the Auraria Higher Education Center Office of Emergency Management work quickly to communicate to all students and employees via the Auraria Campus Alert Emergency Notification System. The system is like a reverse 911 call and delivers text and email notifications to faculty members, staff members and students with important safety information and directives.
Metropolitan State University of Denver faculty members, staff members and students are automatically enrolled in the notification system but should review their contact information each semester.
Please visit the University’s emergency-communication webpage to register, review and/or update your information. Log in using your MSU Denver email address and password. Use the “forgot password” link if you have problems logging in.
Be prepared for bad weather
Snow can come early in Denver, and weather-related delays and closures may be here soon. Generally, full-day closure and delay decisions are determined before 6 a.m. In the event of a campus closure, delayed start or early dismissal, students and employees will receive a text message and/or email from the Rave Emergency Notification Alert System with current information.
Review the University’s Severe Weather Procedures webpage to learn more about closure protocols and communications.
Review safety and security procedures
Whether it’s emergencies and student-behavior concerns or crime prevention near campus, a variety of resources and response options are available. Visit the Campus Safety and Compliance webpage to learn about the University’s safety protocols and how to access support. You’ll find information on calling 911 from campus, filing a criminal report, making a CARE referral and engaging the STAR Program for welfare checks and mental-health-related assistance.
More ways to stay safe and well
Update your emergency contact information through the Personal Information section of Workday. Ensure that your office maintains an updated list of employee contact information and where team members are working, on campus or remotely.
Bookmark the University’s Emergency Communications webpage and check it for an MSU Denver alert. In an emergency, share only official, validated information.
Do not place discarded furniture or equipment in hallways, as they can present a fire hazard. Instead, please submit a work order with Worktags to AHEC.
Become familiar with naxalone kiosk locations around campus. Naloxone is an opioid-overdose-reversal drug known for its rapid and safe response. Good Samaritan laws further protect individuals administering the medication in emergencies, encouraging more people to take action without hesitation.
Watch for upcoming safety trainings
The Auraria Campus Police Department and the Office of Emergency Management offer a variety of free training opportunities to Auraria Campus students, faculty members and staff members. Visit the AHEC website for information on trainings, including:
- Active Harmer Preparedness Training: The goal of these training opportunities is to help you feel empowered and prepared in the unlikely event of an active-harmer incident on campus.
- Stop the Bleed®: Stop the Bleed® (Civilian Trauma Training) teaches participants basic lifesaving medical interventions.
- Adult CPR/first-aid/Automated External Defibrillator training: The MSU Denver Department of Facilities is sponsoring training that will prepare you to recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first-aid emergencies.
