Metropolitan State University of Denver’s Environmental Engineering program has achieved accreditation from ABET, a milestone that underscores the University’s commitment to academic excellence and industry relevance.

ABET, a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization formerly known as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, is globally recognized for accrediting college and university programs in applied and natural sciences, computing, engineering and engineering technology. ABET accreditation validates that a program meets the quality standards necessary to prepare graduates for critical roles in technical fields and global industry leadership.

“The ABET accreditation is a significant achievement for our students and our University,” said Sung Hee Joo, Ph.D., director of Environmental Engineering. “It ensures that our graduates are prepared to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global workforce and to lead the way in solving critical environmental challenges.”

The path to accreditation

Achieving ABET accreditation is no small feat. The process spans about 18 months and includes a detailed readiness review, a self-study report, on-site evaluation and a final accreditation decision. When Joo joined MSU Denver in 2023, the program faced several challenges identified by ABET evaluators. Drawing on her 20 years of expertise in engineering and collaboration with organizations such as NASA, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy, Joo revamped the curriculum, addressed deficiencies and led the program to success.

ABET-accredited programs are recognized worldwide for their quality and commitment to continuous improvement. Graduates of these programs are highly sought after, as accreditation confirms their readiness to tackle industry demands, secure engineering licenses and contribute meaningfully to their professions.

A bright future for students

Environmental Engineering students at MSU Denver stand to benefit immensely from this accreditation. They gain critical advantages, such as:

Ease of licensure: Graduates are now eligible to pursue professional engineering licenses, a vital credential in many careers.

Enhanced career mobility: Accreditation ensures that MSU Denver graduates meet global standards, enhancing their international career prospects.

Opportunities for federal funding: Students gain access to scholarships and federal funding tied to accredited programs.

With ABET accreditation, MSU Denver’s Environmental Engineering program joins a select group of institutions recognized for academic excellence, paving the way for students to lead in a global workforce.
