“The symposium is designed to spark inquiry and curiosity and stimulate discussion,” said Kristy Duran, Ph.D., director of Undergraduate Research. “It’s a place where researchers can connect with one another and potentially form collaborations. And where undergraduate students can connect with potential research mentors.”

The event showcases the breadth and depth of research activities happening at MSU Denver and connects aspiring undergraduate and graduate researchers with faculty researchers. In the first two years, nearly 100 faculty members from every college and school across campus presented research and scholarly work.

Projects are presented in seven-minute lightning talks designed to showcase the essence of the research. In addition, a poster session allows time for discussion and networking. Breakfast and lunch are included.

“For some time, I had been informally studying how storytelling can be used in improving student learning, opening up others to new ideas and attitudes and even cultivating behavior change,” said Cindy Heiss, Ph.D., associate professor of Nutrition. “At the symposium, I met Dr. Christina Faust in Business Communications, who … was able to directly address one of the grant–reviewer comments: how to elicit a story without evoking trauma.”

Heiss says in-person events such as the Research Symposium are instrumental in cultivating a climate of connection and collaboration for disciplines to intersect to create synergistic relationships.

“Everyone should attend,” said Megan Hughes, Ph.D., director of the Honors Program. “Anyone who is interested in research at MSU Denver is invited to this event: faculty, staff, students, community members. We want to promote knowledge about what is happening on our campus, and we want researchers to connect with each other.”
